Women for Greater Philadelphia is pleased to announce that Amanda Owen will be our 2023 Women’s History Month Speaker.
Amanda Owen, a co-founder and the Executive Director of the Justice Bell Foundation, is an author and an independent scholar of women’s history who specializes in the American women’s suffrage movement. Owen wrote and directed the documentary, Finding Justice: The Untold Story of Women's Fight for the Vote, which premiered at the National Women’s History Museum on August 26, 2020. Finding Justice has aired on PBS (WQLN and WHYY) and at number of institutions, organizations, and film festivals.
The title of the talk is:
Pennsylvania Suffragists and Their Fight for Voting Rights
Many heroes of the women’s suffrage movement came from Pennsylvania, some of the best known from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. But hundreds of women in all 67 counties contributed to the cause. This presentation will introduce you to some of these determined, courageous women.
Although many thousands of women and some men advocated for women's voting rights during the 19th and 20th century, few people today know any of their names. Yet, their descendants will number in the hundreds of thousands. Amanda Owen, Executive Director of the Justice Bell Foundation, will share information about a new oral history project dedicated to uncovering the stories of our family members who fought for voting rights. Owen features some of our brave Pennsylvania suffragists, including Elizabeth McShane and Katherine Heffelfinger, who were imprisoned and tortured for picketing for voting rights, and Daisy Lampkin and Etha Carroll Cowles Armstrong who faced racism and discrimination, yet gave their all for the cause.
