2023 Season
Music in the Afternoon at Laurel Hill Mansion
The 2023 season will take place in Laurel Hill Mansion’s wonderful octagonal music room.

Allen Krantz

Classical Guitar
Allen Krantz is a graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory and
Stanford University. He has received acclaim as a solo guitarist and
chamber musician and composer. His performances throughout the United
States have included appearances at Carnegie Hall, Saratoga Performing
Arts Center and the Phillips Collection in Washington. His
concerts feature a diverse selection of piece often featuring original compositions. The program will include works by John Dowland (1563-1626),
G.F. Handel (1685-1759), J.K. Mertz (1806-1856), Agustin Barrios (1885-1944) and Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909).
Following the concert there will be a reception on the back porch with light refreshments and guests will have an opportunity to meet the artist.
Mr. Krantz’s performance is in tribute to Alice Nugent, a longtime member of Women of Greater Philadelphia, an expert seamstress, and the chairperson for our concerts for many years.

Daniel Adam Maltz
Pianoforte
Daniel Maltz is a Viennese based forte piano musician who studied at the
Royal Academy of Music in London and specializes in the First Viennese School-Haydn,
Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert.
This is a rare opportunity to hear the music of Haydn and Mozart played not only on an instrument, fortepiano, of their time but in a historic home of the same period.

Named to honor Frances Anne Wister, founder of the Volunteer Committees of The
Philadelphia Orchestra, the Wister Quartet has earned
high praise from critics and audiences alike for its superb musicianship and memorable
performances.

Then two live performances, one pianoforte and one choral beginning at 1:00P.M. at Laurel Hill Mansion
Steven Page will be playing the fortepiano on Saturday, December 10th from 1:00 P.M. to 1:45 P.M. in the historic octagonal music room of Laurel Hill Mansion. Don’t miss a rare opportunity to hear this English pianoforte from 1808 by Broadwood played.
Then at about 2:30 P.M. approximately 35 members of Philomusica Choral will stop by Laurel Hill Mansion to sing.
Steven Page is a graduate of the Creative Arts and Performing Arts High School and is a native of Philadelphia. He specializes in Gospel and R&B music , in addition to Classical and Jazz. He recently recorded music of 19th century Philadelphia black musician Frances Johnson on Laurel Hill Mansion's fortepiano.
Philomusica Choral is a chorus from Chestnut Hill and Montgomery County
who perform all types of choral music from all periods of music history.
This a free event, with free parking, though donations are very much
appreciated.
The Florian Trio a Musical Picnic at
Laurel Hill Mansion

Following the success of last years concert on the grounds of Laurel Hill Mansion the Women for Greater Philadelphia were delighted to host an outdoor concert by the Florion Trio - Nancy Bean (violin), Lloyd Smith (cello), and Allen Krantz (guitar) on September 17, 2022 at 2:00 P.M. The weather was perfect and a good time was enjoyed by guests, musicians and the hosts
Philadelphia Orchestra musicians and one half of The Wister Quartet, husband and wife team of Nancy Bean, violin, and Lloyd Smith, cello, joined by celebrated composer/guitarist Allen Krantz performed works by Shubert, Heyworth, Barrios, Borghi, Piazolla and more on the grounds of Laurel Hill Mansion.
Patrons arrived at 1:00 P.M. to picnic and enjoy the lovely grounds of Laurel Hill Mansion before the concert.

The Florian Trio Press Release
Women for Greater Philadelphia were delighted to welcome guest back
to Laurel Hill Mansion for an outdoor concert on Saturday, September 11,
2021.
The The Florion Trio - Nancy Bean (violin), Lloyd Smith (cello), and Allen
Krantz (guitar) played.
Patrons were invited to arrive early to picnic and enjoy the lovely grounds
of Laurel Hill Mansion before the concert. It was a lovely day.
It was with regret that in order to mitigate the community spread of COVID-19 it became necessary to cancel the 2020 season of Concerts by Candlelight.

The Franklin Quartet performs music from the dawn of the string quartet
on period instruments. Named after Age of Enlightenment polymath Benjamin
Franklin, the quartet brings a spirit of invention and exploration to its
presentation of early string quartet repertoire.

The Women for Greater Philadelphia were pleased to announce the 42th
Anniversary Season of Concerts by Candlelight at Laurel Hill Mansion. On
five Sunday evenings throughout the summer of 2017, we will again present
our series of chamber music concerts performed by musicians from the Philadelphia
area. Through the years it has been our good fortune to have had so many
accomplished artists accepting our invitation to play. To help defray the
cost of these wonderful performances, we accept tax deductible contributions
of any amount. If you would like to become a Sponsor or Patron, we will
gladly add your name to our printed program. Of course we shall end each
concert evening with our lovely reception on the porch overlooking the river,
where you may enjoy refreshments and have the opportunity to meet and greet

and Lloyd Smith, cello) will present a program featuring Joseph Haydn’s
eloquently serious “Quinten” String Quartet in D Minor, Op. 76, No. 2; a
rhythmically and harmonically intriguing work by Romanian composer Marcel
Farago, his Duo for violin and cello, Op. 52; and Johannes Brahms’ lyrically
heartfelt String Quartet in A Minor, Op. 51, No. 2.

A brief history of Concerts by Candle Light at Laurel Hill Mansion
The "Concerts by Candlelight" series held each summer at Laurel Hill
Mansion has been delighting citizens since its inception in 1976.
The concerts highlighting local and national musicians are organized by
Women For Greater Philadelphia’s music committee. Some of the artists
that have performed include the Jubal trio with Sue Ann Kahn, The Wister
Quartet and Susan Duer. The series which focuses on chamber music
takes place in Laurel Hill Mansion's famous octagonal room.
These popular summer concerts are held in honor of Mrs. Esther Kahn, music
chairman of Women for Greater Philadelphia, for twenty years until her death
in 1996.
